What does “AIGC” mean?
AIGC is the everyday Chinese industry term for generative AI. Chinese regulations use a different, formal term.
The short answer
AIGC stands for AI-generated content. In China it is the everyday umbrella term that companies, media and industry events use for what English speakers call generative AI or GenAI: text, image, audio, video and code generated by models.
AIGC.NEWS uses the name because we cover Chinese AI from where it is built, in the vocabulary used there.
The formal terms in Chinese rules
Chinese regulations do not use AIGC. The 2023 rules for chatbots and other generative services use “generative artificial intelligence” (Interim Measures for the Management of Generative AI Services).
Earlier rules for synthetic media use “deep synthesis”, and the 2025 labeling rules use “AI-generated synthetic content”, defined as text, images, audio, video and virtual scenes generated or synthesized with AI.
